Rancho Bernardo is a master-planned community in the northern hills of San Diego situated between the cities of Escondido and Poway. It’s name is derived from the Mexican government’s Rancho Bernardo land grant enacted between 1842-1845. Geologic features such as canyons, hills, and rock outcroppings define the community’s rural and rugged topography. Local amenities include several shopping centers, professional business parks, and golf courses. 

The community of Rancho Bernardo was developed  by AVCO Community Developers in the 1960s during which time it was annexed by the city of San Diego. Each summer tourists and local residents enjoy the annual summer street fair RB Alive! (Rancho Bernardo Alive). Unfortunately, in October 2007 tragedy struck the community.  The Witch Creek Fire destroyed hundreds of homes in Poway and Rancho Bernardo and completely burned some smaller neighborhoods in the community. 

Nearby attractions include the Bernardo Winery, Mount Woodson Trail, the San Diego Zoo, Lake Hodges, and Black Mountain Open Space Park.
