About National City, California

Under Spanish rule, National City was known as El Rancho del Rey (the Ranch of the King). National City’s present name can be traced to 1810 when the Mexican government named the region Rancho de la Nación (Ranch of the Nation).

San Francisco contractors and builders Frank Kimball along with his brothers Warren and Levi purchased the rancho, establishing the foundation of the city’s plan. Constructing the area’s first roads and railways brought modern transportation and growth to the city.  The brothers also contributed to the natural beauty of the city by importing and planting trees from Europe and Asia which are distributed throughout the city today. In the mid-1900s the city catered to the entertainment of sailors from Naval Base San Diego, at one time earning the nickname the “Mile of Bars”.
