The 1830s brought California the rancho era which quickly ebbed as settlers moved into the newly-created state in 1850. The area’s first post office opened in 1882  at the behest of John Frazier who sought to name the town Frazier’s Crossing and Buena Vista. Since both names were taken Frazier decided upon the name Vista.

The city struggled to grow until the 1920s, when the Vista Irrigation District was created. Water was drawn from Lake Henshaw and new businesses and building downtown soon followed. . Agriculture began to flourish with crops such as tomatoes, celery, and citrus fruits. Thanks to its climate and irrigation, by 1948, Vista was known as the "avocado capital of the world".

The in post-war years, following World War II, housing began to replace agriculture. Vista was incorporated on January 28, 1963. Today, Vista’s business park is home to over 800 companies, one of the largest in the nation. In 2019, Vista had a population of 100,686.
